Organizing My Home Again, Still, Again
Yesterday, I wasn’t going to do Money Saving Mom’s assignment, because I had a pretty busy day. I took a peek at it anyway, and guess what I was doing at 5:00. Getting on the chair to clean the top of my cupboards, since I’d already finished cleaning my refrigerator. It turned out that, since my child was not taking her usual naps, she was entertained by following me around as I went between cleaning the bathroom and the kitchen. In all, it was a productive day. Some of the things I did:
- One load of laundry, which was all that was dirty
- Cleaned the bathroom trash can
- Wiped down and organized the medicine cabinet
- Cleaned the top of the refrigerator
- Cleaned the top of the kitchen cupboards
- Recycled an armful of old papers from college
- Threw out the meatloaf I had accidentally left next to the freezer instead of in the freezer last week. Yeah, that’s right.
- Swept and mopped the kitchen floor with my new mop.
- Made a new recipe for dinner. It was Tater Tot Casserole, but I’d never made it.
- Bought groceries
- Wiped down the washer and dryer
- Scrubbed some more junk from the oven
Today, I was committed to doing Money Saving Mom’s new challenge. Thursday has been the organizing day around here lately. Monday’s the cleaning day, but on Thursdays I try to make a dent in the boxes piled in the basement and design a better system for keeping the house ordered.
Today’s Money Saving Mom task was to clean the kitchen gadget and junk drawers. I cleaned my gadget drawer last week, and we don’t have enough drawers in our kitchen to have a junk drawer. I took the time I had set aside to dump a bunch of old college notes. I’m now done going through my notes from my first college degree. The notes from the second degree are in a different place, but I’ll be getting to those soon. It was strange looking through the notes and reading things in my own handwriting that I don’t understand. I’m really not sure how to find the kernel of a matrix anymore, and I have no idea what type of bonds are between the glucose molecules in a cellulose polymer.
I also rearranged the living room. Our living room is an awkward shape, and our furniture doesn’t match our space very well. This week I’ve been reading an organization book, and I realized one reason our living room has so much stuff out is because there’s not place where the stuff belongs. I hauled up a bookcase from our basement to keep our books and catalogs and random stuff. Yes, I hauled up the bookcase myself–not really recommended.
My husband saw the new furniture arrangement when he got home late tonight, and he might not be very excited about it. The furniture isn’t all against walls anymore, and he likes his couches against walls. However, I put some items (stroller, baby car seat) behind the couch to get them out of the middle of the room, which should be a good thing in his mind. We’ll have to talk in a couple of days and see how he feels. I’m actually not sure how I feel about it, either.
