Name Brand vs. Store Brand: Baby Wipes

I’m a big fan of generic products and store brands, when they work. I’ll try generic brands, and if they’re good they make it into my cupboards. Sometimes, I go back to name brand. Sometimes name brand is better, sometimes they’re the same, and sometimes I actually prefer cheaper versions. To help you out, I’ll be posting some specific products we’ve tried and how the different brands compare.

Today’s product: Baby Wipes

Brands tested:

  • Pampers (mostly SoftCare, some ThickCare)
  • Huggies
  • Parent’s Choice (Wal-Mart)
  • Up & Up (Target)

Results:

Go name brand. With a little effort, and help from Baby Cheapskate, Pampers and Huggies wipes can be found for under $0.02 per wipe. Store brand wipes are frequently 30% less than that, but generally thinner. The thinness results in using about 40% more wipes, which is pretty annoying. The cost is pretty much a wash, and using fewer wipes pulls it in favor of name brand.

Pampers and Huggies wipes are different, so try both brands to see what you prefer. Usually, the soft packs are cheaper in stores, but I prefer the Huggies plastic dispenser to Pampers version.

What do you think? Have you tried other premium wipes and been disappointed? Do you have a store brand you think is great? Have you tried homemade or reusable wipes? Tell us about it.
